This session explores addition and subtraction in Grade 2, focusing on building conceptual understanding through concrete and pictorial representations. Participants will model problems using hundreds charts, number lines, and place value mats to support student reasoning and fluency. Through intentional use of tools, participants will learn how to scaffold strategies such as composing and decomposing tens and ones, connecting models to build towards the algorithm for both addition and subtraction. Teachers will engage in discussions about rigor, student misconceptions, and how multiple representations support mathematical discourse and deeper learning.
